Dark patterns are user interface designs that intentionally mislead or coerce users for the benefit of the service provider. In this paper we employ a natural experiment to test the degree to which UX elements akin to dark patterns drive Amazon’s self-preferencing bias. Implications for ethical interface design are discussed.
