Abstract

In 1160 the Chinese government introduced paper currency. It continued to be used in China over three dynasties, the Song, the Yuan, and the Ming, until around the 1430’s when China adopted a silver based monetary system. This paper will briefly examine the transitions from bronze coin to paper to silver, how Chinese economic doctrines led to a use of paper as currency, and how this period may have influenced subsequence monetary practices in China.
