Abstract

This study's objective was to investigate the learning experience of final-year accounting undergraduate students by introducing Systems Thinking through the Integrated Project. We adapted active learning strategies and real financial data to enhance students learning experience and reduce the gap between accounting education and practice. Integration of Advanced Finance, Internal Auditing and Project Management helped students appreciate the interconnection between business-related disciplines (one element of Systems Thinking and a secondary focus of the Integrated Project). The findings demonstrate the positive impact of the Integrated Project on students' engagement and satisfaction. Over 80 percent of participants reported that the Integrated Project increased their learning engagement and helped them understand how different parts of the business are interconnected. This percentage coincided with text analytics evaluations of open-ended questions where student comments rated the experience of the Integrated Project as 78% positive. Eighty-seven percent agreed that skills and knowledge they had acquired from the Integrated Project would be beneficial in their future career, also positively supported in participant’s comments. We discuss the implications of this study and provide practical recommendations on using the Integrated Project in teaching as a method of curricular integration to develop fundamentals of systems thinking for accounting students.
