Abstract

Entrepreneurs dream big, but achieving big dreams is not easy with the myriad of laws and regulations that impact small businesses. Growing government regulations increase the risk, cost and complexity of operating a small business. It is crucial that entrepreneurs understand and recognize the importance of legal and regulatory issues in their external environment to avoid making costly legal mistakes. One way that nascent entrepreneurs can learn about legal issues is through entrepreneur training programs. Business educators can help new business owners avoid legal pitfalls by teaching them how to recognize, manage and limit legal risks. Certain topics need to be addressed to ensure that students appreciate the central role law plays in their small business. Emerging entrepreneurs, however, have their own ideas about what they would like covered in such a presentation. This paper first reviews the literature on the role of business law in entrepreneurship education. It then presents the results of the survey and compares and analyzes what students want covered in a business law lecture with what emerging entrepreneurs need to understand about the law.
